A smart tag is a small button that appears as data is entered or selected on a spreadsheet. This button provides actions based on the data in the cells. The image below shows the Paste Options smart tag that appears when data is pasted. When the smart tag is clicked, different paste options are provided.

What is a smart tag example?
Word recognizes certain types of data that it labels with Smart Tags.For example, “Nate Sun” is recognized as a “person name” Smart Tag with actions you can take such as Open Contact, Schedule a Meeting, Add to Contacts, or Insert Address. The Smart Tag indicators appear beneath the text as you type.
Smart tags are an early selection-based search feature, found in later versions of Microsoft Word and beta versions of the Internet Explorer 6 web browser, by which the application recognizes certain words or types of data and converts it to a hyperlink.
Excel 2016
- Open Excel on the computer required.
- In the top left, on the File tab, at the bottom, click Options.
