Open the library with the file you want to check out, select the file, click the ellipses (…) in the tool bar, and then click Check out. You can also right-click the file, click either Advanced or More, and then click Check Out. A note is displayed while the file is being checked out.

Check in from the SharePoint document library
- Go to the library where your file is saved.
- Select the file, or files, that you want to check in.
- Above the Documents list, select the three-dot menu, and then select Check in.
- In the Comments area, add a comment that describes the changes you made.
- Click OK.
When you check out a document, users will still be able to access the latest version of the document in SharePoint document library, but only in Read mode. They will not be able to make any edits or save the document back to the library until the original document is checked back in.
Unfortunately SharePoint doesn’t have a “bulk check-in” function. So how do you have the files automatically checked in? The key is in the setting “Require documents to be checked out before they can be edited” – this has to be “No”. Change it through “Document Library Settings”->”Versioning Settings”.
How to Check-in the files:
- Go to Properties view and switch to Standard view.
- Select all the documents using ‘Tick Mark” behind Name column.
- Click on Files tab in the ribbon and select “Check In” under “Open & Check Out”
Go to the Document Library Settings and click on “Manage files which have no checked in version”. You can manage the checked out files here to force check out it to yourself, then check it in.

There is currently no out of the box way to checkout/check-in entire folders and their children. A way forward would be to create a PowerShell script which loops thru the folder and check out/in the desired files.

Please go to the document library which hosts your current page (if you are under “publishing” feature enabled site, go to “pages” list). Check Documents In and Out with SharePoint 2010
