Any site you create in SharePoint is a subsite since it will reside under some other site in your site hierarchy. The only site that is a true site and not a subsite is the very top site of the site collection since it does not appear under any other sites.
The maximum recommended number of web sites is 500,000 sites based on the Personal Site template, and 250,000 sites based on all other templates. This limit applies per site collection and per farm. Performance can degrade as the number of subsites surpasses 2,000 at the site collection level.
Subsites in SharePoint are the same as a regular site except for the fact that they reside inside a site. Technically, the only sites that can’t be termed subsites are the ones that are on the top of the hierarchy, which you usually see in the root.
A sub site cannot have its own mailbox, but you can add the “Conversations” link to your sub site navigation. Furthermore, you can use the Calendar web part to show events and appointments on pages in your sub site. A plan will be automatically provisioned for the site collection.
TL;DR summary. SharePoint sites are organised in a hierarchy that resembles a file system. Each site can contain subsites, so you can have sites nested within each other – just like having nested subdirectories.
How can I tell the difference between a subsite and a page? Pages are contained within subsites. Subsites always have three libraries: Pages, Documents and Images.Documents used within the subsite are added to the Documents library and images used within the subsite are added to the Images library.

To create a new subsite, go to Site Contents, click on the New Site link, and enter details such as Title and description, Web Site Address, and Template Selection. Easily add different web parts to help your team share information and work together on projects.
Delete a SharePoint Server 2019 subsite
- Navigate to the subsite you want to delete.
- Click Settings. at the top of the site and then click Site information.
- At the bottom of the Edit site information panel, click Delete site.
- If you’re sure you want to delete the site, select Delete.
In general, you want to use subsites whenever there is a division of information. I would suggest that you fight against the urge to do most things in the root. In fact, I’ve often seen the root site mostly contain links to all the subsites.
Advantages of Subsites
[Update January 18, 2018] A subsite automatically inherits content types and site columns from its parent site. This is more straight-forward to setup than a Content Type Hub which is what is required to do the same across site collections.
