Introduced in Microsoft Windows Vista, the Navigation Pane has taken the place of the Places bar. It is found on the left side of the File Explorer window, the Open File or Save File window. The Navigation Pane lists all of the drives, history, desktop, and downloads that used to be on the Places bar.

Instructions on How to Show the Navigation Pane in Word
- To enable the display of the Navigation pane, click the “View” tab in the Ribbon.
- For all document views other than “Read Mode,” then check the “Navigation Pane” checkbox in the “Show” button group.
Open Microsoft Outlook 2010 or 2013, on the View tab, the Navigation Pane is placed at the top of the Layout group. Click Navigation Pane, it will appear a pull-down menu, from which you can select the type of Navigation Pane, like Normal, Minimized, Off or Favorite, or make a setting from the Options.
The Navigation Pane appears on the left side of the Outlook window and is how you switch between the different areas of Outlook, such as Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes. In addition, when you’re working within a view, the Navigation Pane displays the folders within that view.
To open the Navigation Pane, click the Find button in the Editing group on the Home tab, or press Ctrl + F. The Navigation pane opens on the left side of the Word window, by default. In the edit box at the top of the pane, enter the word or phrase you want to find. The results should display automatically.

Turn on or off the Navigation Pane
- For Outlook 2010, On the View menu, in the Layout group, click Navigation Pane. For Outlook 2007,On the View menu, point to Navigation Pane, and then click Normal or Minimized.
- Click Normal, Minimized, or Off.
To find it:
- Choose View>Sidebar in the application menu and check the Navigation Pane item in the third set of items.
- You can also tap View in the document menu and select Navigation Pane in the third from left grouping of options.
Choose View > Navigation > [location]. Choose View > Navigation > Go To Page, type the page number in the Go To Page dialog box and then click OK.
Use the Navigation task pane to find all instances of the word flight in the document. In the Home ribbon tab in the Editing ribbon group, you clicked the Find button. Inside the Navigation dialog, you typed flight in the Navigation Search Input. Apply the Heading 1 style to the selected text.
You can add the TOC’s heading to the Navigation pane as follows: Click in the Table of Contents heading and press Ctrl+Shift+S to open the Apply Style dialog. By default, the References > Table of Contents command applies the TOC Heading style to that heading.
Notice that there are three headings in the navigation panel: Headings, Pages and Results. Sometimes when you open this panel, a different heading will show but it’s the Results one you need.
How do I find the Windows search bar?

What to Know
- To hide or show the Finder sidebar, go to Finder > View > Hide Sidebar or Show Sidebar.
- To customize the sidebar, go to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and select changes.
- To add a folder to the Finder sidebar, go to Finder and drag the folder to Favorites.
How do I open the left pane in File Explorer?
